Astoria

Astoria is northwestern Queens — three miles of pre-war brick walk-ups, mid-century apartment houses, and a clean numbered street grid that runs straight from the East River to Steinway Street. The elevated N/W subway traces 31st Street down the middle of it, terminating at Ditmars Boulevard. The neighborhood unfolds outward from each elevated stop: 30 Av for the spine, Broadway for the south, Ditmars for the north, Astoria Boulevard for the gateway to LaGuardia.

What gives Astoria its texture is the unbroken low-rise scale — almost no building in the core exceeds six stories — and a dense food and cafe culture built around Greek tavernas, the Egyptian blocks along Steinway Street, and the institutions that have anchored the neighborhood for decades (St. Demetrios since 1927, Bohemian Hall since 1910).

The eastern third of the neighborhood is the literal Steinway company town. In 1870, William Steinway bought 400 acres in Astoria, moved the family piano factory from Manhattan, and built a workers' village around it — homes, a kindergarten, a streetcar line, the Steinway Reformed Church (1891), and a public bath. The Steinway Mansion at 18-33 41st Street, completed 1858, is an NYC Individual Landmark (designated 1967).

The factory itself — Steinway & Sons, 1 Steinway Place — is still in operation, hand-finishing the concert grand pianos that ship out to the world's recital stages. The site has run continuously since 1880. Most New Yorkers don't realize they live a 25-minute subway ride from one of the last urban factories of its kind in the country.

South Astoria is also a working film and TV production complex. Kaufman Astoria Studios opened in 1920 as Famous Players-Lasky's East Coast arm (later Paramount). The Marx Brothers' first two films were shot here in 1929-30; Sesame Street moved its production to Kaufman in 1993 after 24 years in Manhattan. NYC's only studio backlot opened on the Kaufman lot in 2013. The Museum of the Moving Image shares the campus, opened 1988 and expanded by Leeser Architecture in 2011.

Across the neighborhood, The Noguchi Museum (Isamu Noguchi's converted-factory museum, opened 1985) and Socrates Sculpture Park (Mark di Suvero's 1986 reclaimed-landfill outdoor sculpture park) form the second cultural axis on the Vernon Boulevard waterfront. Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden, opened 1910, is the oldest beer garden in NYC and still operates under the Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society.

The East River edge of Astoria is in the middle of a slow transformation. Halletts Point is the Durst Organization's master-planned residential development on the peninsula — 10 Halletts Point is delivered, and 20 & 30 Halletts Point topped out in 2026 with 647 units of mixed-income housing across two LEED Platinum towers designed by Handel Architects. Astoria Cove is the separate KS Group / Alma Realty project — a $1.2B masterplan totaling ~2,800 units across multiple phases, with the 731-unit Phase 1(A) currently leasing (April 2026 affordable lottery launched). Approved 2014 as the city's first mandatory inclusionary housing project.

The civic chapter of the waterfront is older: Astoria Park spans 60 acres beneath the RFK and Hellgate bridges, anchored by the 1936 WPA-era pool — at 330 feet, the largest public pool in NYC. It reopened in June 2024 after a ~$19M renovation. The NYC Ferry stops at Hallets Cove. Manhattan sits across an unobstructed river view.
